Senior UX Designer – Design Systems

We are partnering with an established software organization to identify a Senior UX Designer with a strong focus on design systems for a fully remote opportunity. This person will play a key role in creating a more consistent, scalable, and modern experience across a complex software platform. The ideal candidate is someone who understands that a great design system is more than a collection of components. They can establish standards, create reusable patterns, work closely with engineers, influence product teams, and help modernize an existing product without losing sight of usability, accessibility, or the needs of the people using it.

Responsibilities

Own and guide the continued evolution of the organization’s design system and establish standards that can be consistently applied across the product.
Define reusable components, patterns, interaction behaviors, visual standards, and design tokens that support scalable product development.
Establish practical processes for creating, reviewing, documenting, and maintaining design system components.
Identify areas of inconsistency, visual debt, outdated patterns, and usability issues across an established software platform.
Develop strategies for modernizing legacy experiences while maintaining continuity and usability for existing users.
Create and maintain design system documentation that provides clear guidance for designers and developers.
Partner with front-end engineers to ensure components and design patterns are implemented accurately and efficiently.
Review implemented experiences and provide guidance when products or features do not align with established design standards.
Design user experiences for complex web-based workflows and applications when new components or patterns are required.
Translate complicated requirements into intuitive user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs.
Develop reusable interaction patterns that improve usability while reducing duplicated design and development effort.
Establish and maintain standards for typography, spacing, color, layout, iconography, responsive behavior, and other visual elements.
Ensure design decisions support accessibility and inclusive user experiences, with particular attention to WCAG standards.
Work with Product Managers, Engineers, QA, and other stakeholders throughout discovery, design, development, and implementation.
Present design recommendations and explain the reasoning behind design system decisions to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Help product teams understand how and when to use established components and patterns.
Participate in design reviews and provide constructive feedback to promote consistency and quality.
Use customer feedback, usability findings, analytics, and other available information to identify opportunities for product improvement.
Mentor and support other designers in design system practices, accessibility, visual design, and interaction design.
Evaluate new design and prototyping technologies and determine where AI-assisted tools can improve efficiency and exploration.
Use AI responsibly to accelerate design concepts, variations, documentation, and prototypes while applying appropriate human review.
Help establish processes that allow the design system to evolve as the product, technology, and user needs change.

Required Experience

6+ years of experience in UX Design, Product Design, Visual Product Design, Interaction Design, or a related discipline.
Demonstrated experience creating, managing, or evolving a design system used across a complex digital product.
Strong understanding of component-based design, reusable patterns, design tokens, and scalable UI frameworks.
Experience designing for SaaS, enterprise, B2B, or other complex software products.
Proven experience modernizing existing web applications or helping establish consistency across large or mature product environments.
Strong portfolio demonstrating design system work, visual design, interaction design, product modernization, and shipped experiences.
Advanced proficiency with Figma and experience working with component libraries, variants, variables, and design-system workflows.
Experience collaborating with engineers working in component-based front-end environments such as React, Angular, Storybook, or comparable technologies.
Strong understanding of responsive design and modern web interface principles.
Working knowledge of HTML and CSS and an understanding of how design decisions translate into front-end implementation.
Familiarity with accessibility standards, particularly WCAG.
Experience collaborating with Product, Engineering, QA, and other cross-functional teams.
Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to influence stakeholders and build alignment.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to balance consistency with flexibility and understand when an established pattern should—and should not—be applied.
Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and take ownership of a large area of the product experience.

Preferred Experience

Bachelor’s degree in UX Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Graphic Design, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. Experience leading a design system initiative across a large or complex application. Experience with major product modernization or visual redesign initiatives. Experience working with Storybook or similar component documentation environments. Experience with product analytics, usability testing, and customer research. Experience designing workflow-heavy, data-intensive, or enterprise applications. Experience working with product teams that use Agile development methodologies. Experience using AI-assisted design or development tools to accelerate prototyping, exploration, documentation, or other design workflows. Experience designing AI-enabled, automated, recommendation-based, or conversational experiences. Experience mentoring other designers or helping establish UX standards and processes.
