Superintendent

Excerpt Lead it. Own it. Get it done. Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Construction Superintendent to lead large-scale, ground-up commercial construction projects ranging into the double-digit millions. This is an opportunity for a seasoned construction professional who knows how to take ownership of a project in the field and drive it from groundbreaking through successful completion. The ideal candidate understands what it takes to manage a major project from a General Contractor’s perspective—coordinating subcontractors and trades, maintaining schedule and quality, enforcing safety standards, anticipating challenges, and keeping the project moving while maintaining strong relationships with owners and project stakeholders. This is a highly visible role for a Superintendent who takes pride in getting the job done on time, safely, within budget, and to the owner’s expectations.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities
Take overall ownership of field operations for large-scale, ground-up construction projects
Lead and coordinate subcontractors, trade partners, vendors, and field personnel
Establish and maintain project schedules and drive progress toward key milestones
Coordinate daily construction activities to ensure work is progressing safely, efficiently, and according to plan
Review project plans, drawings, specifications, and schedules to identify potential issues before they impact the project
Coordinate sequencing and scheduling between multiple trades and subcontractors
Monitor manpower, productivity, material deliveries, and overall jobsite progress
Identify schedule risks and develop solutions to keep the project moving
Hold subcontractors accountable for schedule, quality, safety, and contractual requirements
Conduct regular jobsite meetings and communicate priorities, expectations, and upcoming activities
Work closely with the Project Manager to address project issues, changes, and potential impacts to cost and schedule
Maintain a strong focus on quality control and ensure work is completed according to plans and specifications
Enforce company and project-specific safety policies and OSHA requirements
Maintain a clean, organized, and professional jobsite
Coordinate inspections, testing, commissioning activities, and other project requirements
Communicate regularly with owners, architects, engineers, subcontractors, and internal leadership
Develop strong relationships with owners and project stakeholders while maintaining appropriate project boundaries
Identify conflicts, constructability concerns, and potential delays and proactively address them
Document project progress and maintain accurate field records
Participate in project planning, scheduling, and preconstruction activities when appropriate
Help ensure the project is completed on schedule, within budget, safely, and to the owner’s satisfaction
Provide leadership, accountability, and direction to the entire project team in the field

Required Experience

Qualifications
Significant experience as a Superintendent with a General Contractor
Proven experience leading large-scale commercial construction projects, preferably $10M+
Strong ground-up construction experience
Experience with complex commercial, industrial, manufacturing, distribution, healthcare, institutional, or similar projects
Demonstrated ability to successfully manage projects from mobilization through completion
Strong understanding of construction means, methods, sequencing, scheduling, and field operations
Proven ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, civil, and MEP drawings and specifications
Strong knowledge of OSHA and construction safety requirements
Experience coordinating multiple subcontractors and trades simultaneously
Strong understanding of project schedules and the ability to drive subcontractor performance against those schedules
Excellent communication and leadership skills
Ability to build strong relationships with owners, subcontractors, architects, engineers, and internal project teams
Highly organized with strong attention to detail
Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
Ability to anticipate problems and develop solutions before they become schedule or cost issues
Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with multiple competing priorities
Proficiency with construction project management and scheduling software
Strong understanding of quality control and project documentation
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field is preferred, but equivalent construction experience will be considered

Preferred Experience

Ideal Background The strongest candidates will likely come from established General Contractors and have a track record of successfully delivering complex, ground-up projects in the $10M–$50M+ range. The company is open to candidates coming from a variety of commercial construction backgrounds. Industrial and manufacturing experience is particularly relevant, but strong Superintendents with backgrounds in healthcare, large commercial, institutional, distribution, or other complex construction environments will also be considered. Most importantly, this person needs to understand that being a Superintendent is about more than simply managing the jobsite. They need to be a leader, communicator, scheduler, problem-solver, and owner advocate who can anticipate what is coming next, hold people accountable, and keep the entire project moving toward successful completion.
