Design and Fabrication Manager

The Design & Fabrication manager is responsible for the design and fabrication part of “do work” function. Design includes preparing shop drawings, line work from scan data, production drawings, installation drawings, as-built drawings and more. Fabrication encompasses the fabrication shop where materials are cut, and panels are fabricated and crated for shipment to a project. The role sits on the company’s leadership team.

Responsibilities

Leads, manages, and holds accountable direct reports.
* Trains and develops employees on standard procedures to improve project performance, shop efficiency, and safety.
* Works closely with Human Resources on personnel issues.
* Maintains time and production records.

· Communicate with direct reports and the project manager or the assistant project manager.
· Short- and long-term planning
* Daily drafting operation.
* Plans or adjusts work hours to meet drafting schedules.
* Resource allocation.
Coordinates work to meet project completion dates.
Collaborates across functions – drafting, fabrication, and installation.
Recommend measures to improve performance.
Maintain a safe working environment.

Trains safety policies and practices.

Maintenance of equipment, tools, and facility
* Preventive maintenance.
* Repairs.
Housekeeping.
Inventory management
* Records incoming inventory.
* Records and reports consumption for inventory allocation.
* Orders items to maintain a sufficient supply.
· Technical Drawing and Modeling
* Utilize advanced software such as AutoCAD, BIM, and HiCAD to create precise construction documents, shop drawings, and fabrication plans.
* Manipulate point cloud data to generate accurate as-built condition models.
* Develop and maintain a library of standard details and specifications for architectural products.
· Design support
* Collaborate with architects and designers to translate conceptual ideas into technically feasible plans.
* Contribute to the aesthetic and functional aspects of architectural products, particularly in façade design.
* Provide technical input during the early stages of project development to ensure constructability.

· Product development
* Assist in the development and optimization of architectural products, with a focus on innovative façade systems.
* Research and propose new materials and technologies that could enhance our product offerings.
* Create prototypes and mockups of new architectural elements.
· Technical problem-solving
* Address complex design and installation challenges, finding solutions that balance aesthetics, functionality, and constructability.
* Collaborate with fabrication and installation teams to resolve field issues efficiently.
· Quality control / assurance
* Ensure all designs and drawings comply with building codes, industry standards, and project-specific requirements.
* Conduct regular quality checks on drawings and models before release to production or clients.
* Develop and maintain quality control procedures for the design and drafting process and fabricated products.
· Efficiency and technology integration
* Implement and optimize software and processes to improve workflow efficiency.
* Train team members on new software tools and best practices in design technology.
* Continuously evaluate and propose new technologies that could benefit our design and production processes.

· Client and team collaboration
* Work closely with project managers, fabrication teams, and installation crews to ensure seamless project execution.
* Assist in client presentations and design approvals, providing technical expertise to support sales efforts.
* Facilitate communication between design, engineering, and construction teams to ensure design intent is maintained throughout the project lifecycle.

Required Experience

Ability to create a sustainable structure that will promote scalable growth and value to the department.

Preferred Experience

· Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and 3D modeling software. · Proficiency using Microsoft Suite, Bluebeam, Adobe, PDF Xchange (or other PDF readers). · Excellent spatial visualization and problem-solving skills. · Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
